Ben,
Congratulations on your refugee status. Hopefully it is one of many legal victories in your future and a real foundation in trying to get your life started again. I am glad to see that you are not resting on your laurels and have the courage to keep pursuing your rights.
I hope the time is coming when Canada and other countries wake up from their nightmare and break from these barbaric practices of the United States “justice” system.

We must stand up to injustice like this or we lose our humanity. We must affirm the rights of EVERY individual, and demand right be done for EVERY atrocity or we consent to the same abuse being visited upon us.

The Canadian government MUST be TOLD that THIS IS NOT RIGHT and is not acceptable.

Benatta has support on my (the US) side of the border, too. Sadly, United States citizens are becoming more and more used to arbitrary detention and torture. Our government (both wings) is giving up on international approval and the rights of the individual. If Canada still cares about her reputation in the world, now is the time to distance herself from the brutality Benamar has gone through by MAKING RIGHT for their part in this horrible wrong. Ben did the right thing by not participating in the torture he saw in Algeria, and he was "rewarded" by being tortured himself. He needs citizenship and compensation, so that he can put his life back together from the years of suffering and dehumanization to which he was subjected.

It is truly sad that our country and Canada have allowed something like this to happen. Our so-called leaders should be ashamed and embarassed. That seems to be the method of operation in many cases, to a lot of people it is a lot easier to just sweep things under the rug and attempt to forget and hope the general public forgets as well. Then the media comes in and bombards us with so much useless information on a daily basis that we tend to get sidetracked from the important issues. Ben deserves to not be forgotten. I am sure an explanation followed by true apologies would be more than any monetary compensation. You cannot put a price on five years of your life just taken from you.

1. Canada should give Mr. Benatta citizenship now.

2. Both Canada and the United States owe Mr. Benatta public apologies and financial compensation.

3. Canadian and American officers and officials involved in Mr. Benatta's transfer, imprisonment and torture should be prosecuted.

91 signatures so far on the petition. That's just in the two days we've had the petitions up. I am encouraged. Keep them coming and spread the word! Thank you so much for all the folks who signed already. Your voice matters, and your support is... immeasurable.

Thank you 91 times over! (So far.)

As Nicole said, comments of support are very important. I'd like people to also know that we are working on a petition; our targets are Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Stockwell Day, who is the Minister for Public Safety. We're working on an action message and goals. I would like to set a goal of "x" number of signatures on the petition, and of course I'd like to see the number substantially exceed the goal. What initial number of petitioners should we place as our goal? I worry that if I set it too high, we might not meet our goal, and if we set it too low, it may (or may not?) make them sit up straight and take notice. Any idea of what "x" should be?

Also this is just on the Canadian side. There are many Americans as well who have had it up to their back teeth with the abuse and torture that our government has been engaged in, both at home and abroad. In this case he was tortured on U.S. soil. I also understand that despite Canadian officials demanding that the U.S. take Maher Arar off the terrorist watchlist, they've refused to do so, despite that there was no charges brought against him and there were no links between Arar and terrorism (would that the same could be said about U.S. officials).

So in that vein, I'd like to also start a petition for Americans to sign. I'm having a little trouble figuring out who our targets should be. I would like to come up with someone by tomorrow. Time is of the essence. I will have to wake up early tomorrow and start making some phone calls.
